Data protection registration: self-assessment

Under the Data Protection Act individuals and organisations that process personal information need to register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), unless they are exempt.

By going through the following questions, you will be able to decide if you – as an individual or on behalf of your business or organisation – need to register with the ICO.

Those who are unlikely to be exempt include accountants, barristers, childminders, consultants, dentists, doctors, employment and recruitment agencies, estate agents, financial advisers, journalists, letting agents, private investigators, schools, solicitors, trustees of pension schemes and businesses using personal information obtained from a credit reference agency.

It should take 1-5 minutes to complete.
