The University of Oxford’s project examined the privacy needs arising in smart homes and explored the design space required to meet these needs. Building upon previous research into the privacy implications of apps and smart devices, as well as individuals’ awareness of how their data is used and shared, the project conducted a study of six smart homes to understand current privacy preferences, prototype new tools, interfaces, and approaches to smart home privacy. The project team also worked with smart home designers, product teams and compliance officers to understand how these alternative design approaches might be integrated into their ‘data protection by design’ processes and disseminated the resulting best practices.
