Data protection fee self assessment

You are not required to pay a fee

Based on your answers, you no longer need to pay a data protection fee.

This might be because:

  • your business's processing activities have changed;
  • you are not currently trading; or
  • you were paying the fee even though you weren't required to.

If this is not the case, please contact us and a member of our data protection fee team will be able to advise whether you still need to pay your fee.

The data protection fee is a legal requirement for organisations processing data in the UK (that don't qualify for an exemption). Failure to pay could result in a fine, so you must be sure you do not need to pay before cancelling your registration.

How to cancel your registration

If you no longer need to pay a data protection fee, please complete our online cancellation form.

If you cancel a registration which is paid by direct debit, you’ll also need to cancel the direct debit with the bank or building society.

Should I pay the fee even though I am exempt?

We do not expect you to pay if you are exempt, but some organisations choose to register and pay a fee despite being exempt so they can be listed on our register of data protection fee payers.

Your data protection obligations

Even though you are exempt from paying a fee, you still need to comply with your other data protection obligations. You can find advice to help you with this on our website here: Advice for small organisations.
