10. Is your organisation a charity or does it have exempt charitable status?

A ‘charity’ in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is an institution set up for charitable purposes only. In Scotland, it means a body entered in the Scottish Charity Register. This includes some schools such as multi academy trusts (MATs).

For a full description of what qualifies as an exempt charity, see Section 1 of the Charities Act 2011 (a) or the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 (b).
