I don't need to pay the data protection fee - do I need to tell the ICO?

Cancel your registration

If you have registered with us and paid a data protection fee but you believe you are now exempt - you should cancel your registration.

The data protection fee is a legal requirement for organisations processing data in the UK. Failure to pay could result in a fine, so you must be sure you to not need to pay before cancelling your registration.

How to cancel your registration

If you no longer need to pay a data protection fee, please complete our online form.

If you cancel a registration which is paid by direct debit, you’ll also need to cancel the direct debit with the bank or building society.

Should I pay the fee even though I am exempt?

We do not expect you to pay if you are exempt, but some organisations choose to register and pay a fee despite being exempt so they can be listed on our register of data protection fee payers.
