Complaints about home CCTV systems
-
1. Is your complaint about a fixed camera?
No – my complaint is about a movable, digital or phone camera.
You should not complain to the ICO
Data protection law doesn’t cover moving cameras capturing image and audio recordings belonging to domestic users. An example of this is a dashboard camera in a person’s car.
If you submit a complaint, we cannot act on it.
If you are concerned about footage someone has captured, and you can contact the person, we suggest you follow these steps:
-
- Contact the person – if you are concerned about talking to them in person, you could write a letter.
- Ask why they are doing the recording –if you understand why they are recording, it might put your mind at ease.
- Explain your concerns – the user may not understand why you are worried about being recorded. If you explain your reasons, they might be willing to take action to avoid recording you.
- Ask to see what is being recorded –the footage that is being captured may not be as intrusive as you think. If you ask to see an example of what footage the camera is capturing, it might put your mind at ease.
