Complaints about home CCTV systems

You should not complain to the ICO

CCTV cameras that only capture image and audio recordings on someone’s property, eg in their house or garden are not necessarily breaking data protection law.

If you submit a complaint, we cannot action it.

If you are concerned about the captured footage, and you can contact the person, we suggest you follow these steps:

    1. Contact the person – if you are concerned about talking to them in person, try writing them a letter.
    2. Ask why they are using CCTV – people usually install domestic CCTV cameras and smart door bells are to monitor and protect personal property and keep the user and their family safe. If you understand why they are recording, it may put your mind at ease.
    3. Explain your concerns – the CCTV user may not understand why you are worried about being recorded. If you explain your reasons, they may give you access or delete the footage of you.
