Case study: Graham

Talking about digital privacy is a daily practice in trust, choice and responsibility

Graham lives in Edinburgh with his wife and their soon to be eight-year-old daughter. While his professional role is as a Cyber Security Manager / Chief Security Officer for a large local authority, the role he values most is being a dad.

For Graham, it all starts with trust and making sure his daughter has the tools to understand the online world. His daughter has a tablet, but he and his wife currently adopt an “offline only” policy with it. Graham is building up the foundations now by discussing online privacy and digital footprints with his daughter.

Seeing his daughter taking pictures on her digital device, Graham felt that it was time to start an open conversation to ensure his daughter understood what to share and what not, as when it’s out there, it’s out there forever. And it’s a lesson that involves the adults, too.

His advice to other parents? To just be really open and honest, give your children the tools to evaluate what is appropriate to share, make their own decisions about what to post, and then trust them.

You’re always going to have the grandparent or an uncle posting photos without permission, but we had conversations early.

"I want her digital footprint to be as small as possible at the moment. I think it’s important to let it be her decision, so when she wants to do it, it’s her choice what to share.”
