Parental controls

What are parental controls?

Most social media, video sharing, and mobile games platforms have parental control features.

These let you:

  • turn off location sharing;
  • set time limits on the platform;
  • check your child's activity;
  • approve friend requests or contacts yourself; and
  • block features such as messaging, live streaming, or commenting.

Can I manage parental controls?

Parental controls can offer some control over location, privacy and advertising settings but it’s always worth checking these settings separately too for any new game, app or device that your child uses.

You can also set parental controls on your broadband, games console, mobile phone and other devices.

Parental controls are often located in ‘Settings’, under sections such as ‘Family’, ‘Privacy’, or ‘Parental controls’.

Some platforms require parents to create a separate parent account or use third-party family management apps such as Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link.
