Data protection and journalism: a guide for the media
04 September 2014, ICO consultation, Closed
In the report of the Leveson Inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the press, Lord Justice Leveson recommended that the ICO should, in consultation with the industry, issue comprehensive guidelines and advice on appropriate principles and standards to be observed by the press in the processing of personal data. Our draft data protection guide for the media responds to that recommendation. It covers the Data Protection Act as it currently stands – any proposed changes to the law would be for the government to consider and take forward separately.
We ran a short consultation last year on proposals for the form, scope and structure of our guidance. A summary of the responses to that consultation was published, and the responses informed the development of our draft guide.
