More empathetic support for victims of sensitive data breaches

Ripple Effect is a campaign to humanise data breaches and improve how organisations respond. It has helped increase the public’s confidence in exercising their rights and has prompted many organisations to reconsider their approach.

We created a one-page guide explaining people’s rights and what they could do if they experience a sensitive data breach. When asked, 89% of respondents said they found the guide clear and easy to use. This shows that accessible resources like this empower people to exercise their rights and encourage accountability.

We shared the one-page guide with 210 organisations. Of these, 24%, including Citizens Advice and Age UK, shared it with their frontline teams, including call handlers. With 22 speaker slots reaching over 4,000 people, organisations began embedding campaign content into their internal training. This includes NHS England who have adapted their data breach letter templates.

We continue to engage with stakeholders and empower them to support their audiences. For example, we’re starting work with parliamentarians to ensure they are better placed to support constituents who are worried about a data breach.

According to 40% of support organisations, we’ve helped them provide better support to victims experiencing data breaches. Meanwhile, 62% of these organisations say our campaign and easy-to-follow resources have led them to reconsider how they approach data breaches.
