A public authority is an organisation whose function is of a public nature. For example:
- government departments, legislative bodies and the armed forces;
- local government;
- National Health Service (NHS) including trusts, local health boards and clinical commissioning groups;
- maintained schools, academy schools and further and higher education institutions;
- police;
- principal councils;
- parish councils;
- fire and rescue authorities; and
- passenger transport executives.
