The UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.

Use this service to register and pay the fee for the first time.

Every organisation or sole trader who processes personal information needs to pay a data protection fee to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), unless they are exempt.

When you complete an application form online or make a payment, we will send your confirmation the following working day.

 Make your payment

Tip: if you are having trouble making an online payment, sometimes it can help to change the browser you are using.

You will need to fill in this form in one session, so we suggest you get everything you will need to complete it before you start. You will need:

  • your credit/debit card or other payment details;
  • details about the organisation(s) you are registering, eg Companies House number (if applicable), name, address; and
  • details about the number of staff you have and your turnover.

Tip: only click ‘PAY NOW’ once, and don’t refresh your page while your payment is being processed, as you may pay twice.

New registration

It should take about 15 minutes.

A Welsh language registration form (pdf) is also available.
