The ICO exists to empower you through information.

Check if your complaint is eligible to come to the ICO or find out if there is more action you need to take before you can complain to us. For example, you may need to have requested an internal review before you can make a complaint.

If you are able to complain to us, you will need have the following information:

  • copies of any letters or emails between you and the organisation that contain details of your request(s) for information;
  • a copy of your request for an internal review (where appropriate);
  • a letter of consent from the person you are complaining for, if you are complaining for someone else; or
  • other evidence of your concern.

If you do not provide the information we need, we may not accept your complaint.

You should also read about what to expect from the ICO when you complain. This tells you how long our complaints process takes and examples of likely outcomes.
