Our work and departments
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent regulator for data protection and information rights law, upholding information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
We achieve this by:
- educating organisations, through guidance and engagement to understand when and how they can use personal data;
- taking action against organisations that do not comply with the law;
- helping individual's to understand and exercise their rights; and
- working with other regulators in the UK and globally to improve information rights standards.
