The Data Protection Act 1998 requires every data controller (eg organisation, sole trader) who is processing personal information to register with the ICO, unless they are exempt. Over half a million organisations are currently registered.
A Welsh language registration form (pdf) is also available.
Receipts will be emailed to you within one working day of completing your transaction. If you have not received a receipt after one working day, please contact us.

How much does it cost?
The cost of your data protection registration depends on your size and turnover, but for most businesses it costs £35. The payment is always VAT:nil
You'll only need to pay £500 if you have:
- a turnover of £25.9M and more than 249 members of staff; or
- if you are a public authority with more than 249 members of staff.
Some organisations only pay £35 regardless of their size and turnover. These are:
- small occupational pension schemes; and
- organisations that have been in existence for less than one month.
You can use our fee-assessment tool to find out how much you will need to pay.
